Therapeutic and Nursing Intervention to the Women Alcoholism

Abstract
Excessive intake of alcohol has already reached a disturbing level in some Western industrialized countries. The situation in Korea is considerably less serious as an absolute majority to the male half of the population. However, with the on-going industrialization process, the number of cases of alcohol related problems among women will rapidly increase. Such a probability requires us to identify the unique medical problems of women alcoholics and, based on the results to work out more efficient social and psychopathological approach to prevent and treat alcoholism among women.
Bearing in mind the above, this study attempted to identify the differences in the etiology of alcoholism between male and females and the differences in symptoms, prognosis and treatment as well as those complications inherent in the unique sex role of women which are considered to be significant in planning for the treatment and nursing care of women alcoholics.
Research showed that in the area of prevention, it is necessary to pay special attention to three vulnerable groups: young, women in their early 20¢¥s who struggle in pursuit of meaningful work and inter-personal relationships: the rapidly increasing number of career women which is emerging as a result of the enhanced social status of women; and middle-aged women who have experienced the death of a spouse, divorce, or who lapse into depression as their children grow up and leave home.
The housewife drinker in particular, needs attention as her life style allows problem to go unnoticed for longer periods and thereby increasing the likelihood of chronic dependence.
At the moment adolescent drinkers are in a minority but again the number is certain to increase in, the years ahead along with the expansion of pleasure-seeking trends in society. Teen-age drinking is often associated with crime and delinquency misdemeanor and therefore needs sustained efforts. Another category requiring serious research is pregnant women in which the intake of alcohol can often result in fetal alcohol syndrome.
Female alcoholics differ from their male-counterparts in etiology. it is therefore necessary to conduct more extensive research into the psychological, social, and physiological etiology of female alcoholics.
In addition, female alcoholics tend to be less cooperative in the process of treatment and create more problems in their management. They also show higher frequencies of relapse and of developing depressive conditions.
To resolve the above-mentioned problems, it is necessary to develop new therapeutic and nursing care approaches that fully take into account the sex role of women.
